Green Tree Monitor are the easiest to care for and most colorful of all tree monitor species. The Green Tree Monitor is an excellent long term pet that can live up to 30 years with proper care and diet. Body Type: Slender Juvenile Color Pattern: Bright green adult coloration, purple pattern on face and neck when young. Adult Coloration: Green shading to a yellow belly, orange-red ventral crest running from nose to base of tail, dark blue or black stripe along spine, black bands around ankles and wrists, yellow scales across back. They live an average of 10-15 years. Females have been known to use termite mounds as nests because they serve as good incubators. The female may lay up to 3 clutches of eggs which will hatch after about 160-190 days. Green tree monitors are also known as emerald tree monitors.
Green Trees are intelligent, and can make great pets. However, they are not for everyone. Baby monitors usually do not bite, but excessive handling should be avoided until your lizard gets used to you. Your first impulse will be to hold your new monitor and pet it. While most monitor lizards are carnivorous, eating eggs, smaller reptiles, fish, birds, insects, and small mammals, some also eat fruit and vegetation, depending on where they live.
