The Nile Monitor is the largest African lizard ranging in size from 14 to 20 inches. They are mainly found in sub-Saharan Africa, but their range extends into southern Arabia. Nile Monitors are very placid and not aggressive, but have sharp teeth and claws that can cause harm to humans. They feed on fish, crayfish, birds and small mammals. A male will usually grow to 3 feet (1 m) or more in length; females are considerably smaller at around 2 feet (60 cm) long when fully grown.They are used as pets and for educational purposes. Nile Monitor is a very social species and need other monitors or different reptiles for company. They will be happiest with a large tank (minimum 6 foot long for juveniles) that allows plenty of space for climbing and exploring, along with hiding spots. Also like water so adding a water dish will make them happy.
